Welcome to the Ballard High School Performing Arts!

The Ballard High School Music & Drama Department is lauded throughout the Northwest and beyond for its high level of musical and performance excellence. Ballard provides one of the most complete high school music programs in Seattle - offering instruction in voice, wind and string instruments spanning jazz to classical. The Drama Program consistently presents best-in-class plays and musicals, and participated in the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Tons of Thanks

Thank you to all who came out to the performing arts information meeting. It was a great success! We look forward to keeping you up-to-date on all things "Ballard Performing Arts". Keep an eye out, for ways you can get involved. No amount of involvement is too small. We can't do this without you. If you couldn't make the meeting, the overview can be found HERE.

A shout out to those who have already helped this year, with uniforms, paperwork, donations,chaperoning and encouraging your student(s).


Band
Camp and Announcements

Congratulations to Mr. James and the BHS Marching Band for another great band camp! The band has nearly 180 members and is the largest marching band in the city. We look forward to seeing them at the football games soon.  

Don't forget to mark your calendars to watch them in the Homecoming halftime show on Saturday, October 21st, 5:00pm Memorial Stadium!

Band reminders:

  • HUSKY BAND DAY is September 16th! Band members and chaperones should arrive at BHS at 11:00 am for the 6:30 pm start time. Expect to return at 9:00 p.m. to BHS. Chaperones are still needed and receive free admittance to the game, please contact Band Rep Jen Witeck. If anyone would like to attend the game as a spectator, the tickets can be purchased HERE.

    • Food for the day must adhere to Uniform Policy rules. No food/drink which will stain the uniform such as: mustard, relish, cheese, soda, hot chocolate, etc. We strongly encourage beverages and food be in plastic containers as no glass is allowed inside Husky Stadium.  

  • Marching band students need to purchase an ASB card in the main office or purchase online at SchoolPay on the Source

  • Check out the Marching Band FAQ  page for useful information and helpful tips for getting through the season.

  • Band's first BHS football game will be 9/30. We need chaperones! Please contact Jen Witeck if you are interested in joining the band under the "Saturday Night Lights."

  • URGENT - WIND ENSEMBLE WHISTLER DEPOSITS ARE PAST DUE!!

    If you are in the Wind Ensemble, pay online  or send in a check for $150 payable to Ballard Performing Arts or request a transfer from your student fundraising account by Monday, September 18th. Without every student's/chaperon's deposits, due next week, we forfeit our lodging and group dining requests. 

     The second Whistler payment of $200 is due Thursday, November 16. The third and final payment is TBD and due Thursday, January 18.

  • Advanced Choir and Concert Choir leaves for Camp Burton: Friday, September 15th. We are loading the busses at 4pm and driving away at 4:15pm.

Orchestra Musical Notes
Camp, Invitational, NYC prep, & Fiddle Ensemble
  • Camp: September 29th-October 1st. Orchestra camp is quickly approaching - thank you to those who have volunteered to chaperone! Paperwork and fees for students are past due, please submit ASAP. Busses will depart from school at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29th, and return to school by about 2:00 p.m on Sunday, Oct. 1st. Paperwork can be found HERE.

  • Chamber Orchestra will perform for the PLU Orchestra Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13th. We need 6 parent drivers. Please consider driving students and attending the day of performances. Contact Sylvia Schweinberger to get set up as a chaperone.

  • Chamber Orchestra is bound for Lincoln Center in 2018!  Parents, if you would like to chaperone, or plan a trip around the National Orchestra Cup in NYC, please get in touch with Ms. Newell or Sylvia Schweinberger ASAP. The second payment for students, and first payment for chaperones is due Nov. 15th. Please see attached sheet for a tentative itinerary and a payment schedule for the trip. 

  • Fiddle Ensemble is kicking off another year starting on Monday, Sept. 18th, and will rehearse from 6:00-7:30 each Monday evening. Please see Ms. Newell for more information about this ensemble.

METAMORPHOSES

Mary Zimmerman's play Metamorphoses is based on Ovid's fifteen-volume work of transformation myths. Positioned in and around a large pool on the stage, the characters enact the adaptations of Ovid's tales, juxtaposing the ancient and the contemporary in both language and image. The tone of the drama echoes the themes of change and contrast, from the humor of Phaeton's therapy session to the tragedy of Midas and his daughter. 

Ballard High School is fortunate to have Cal Arts graduate (and former Riley student) Chelsea Duvall as a guest director for this evening of theatre.


Annual Fees
Annual fees due Sept 15th

To cover some of the costs for transportation, music, and t-shirts, Ballard Performing Arts collects a one-time fee at the beginning of the year, instead of collecting fees one at a time.

Please send in the packet and payment, or the scholarship packet by Sept. 15th. It's our goal for every student, regardless of finances, to participate in the arts. 

You should have received a packet with the information in the mail during the summer. If you didn't receive a packet, or would like to refer to it online during the year, it is posted on the website, HERE.

Notifications regarding scholarship decisions will be sent out to families in mid-October. All scholarship applicants should go to camp.

This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Ballard High School Performing Arts Boosters Club - and one of the most fun! Entertainment is provided by the BPA student small ensembles. Enjoy drinks, dinner, silent and live auctions and time to mingle with other true fanatics of the incredible Ballard Performing Arts programs.

Washington State University School of Music would like to invite prospective students and their parents/guardians to its Fall 2017 "Music Major For A Day" open house. 

Enjoy a day in Pullman, WA and see what a typical schedule is like for a music major. This event is open to all students considering a degree in music education, music performance, general music, or a double major. Attendance is FREE of charge.

Mark Your Calendars for 2017 - 2018

The Ballard Bands have some exciting activities planned for the 2017-2018 school year.  Parents and guardians, please mark your calendars now. The appropriate paperwork and payment information was sent home with your musician last week and is also available online - see links below:

Con Brio Music Festival - Whistler B.C. - Paperwork Due Now
The Wind Ensemble will travel to beautiful British Columbia to participate in the Con Brio Music Festival April 19-22, 2018!  While the final cost is still to be determined, we anticipate a cost of approximately $500 per student.  The package includes round-trip bus transportation, three nights lodging, hot breakfasts, group dinners, a student welcome reception, a ride on a cable car, scavenger hunt, and of course, the music festival workshops and performances.  

Registration and Fees Due July 1, 2017!

With over 4,000 musicians in attendance, the registration form and initial deposit of $150 are due on July 1, 2017 in order to secure our lodging preference and restaurant reservations.  Payments may be paid via cash, check or online via credit card for a small additional processing fee. Again, please complete a scholarship form if you are in need of partial financial assistance. Registration and/or check should be mailed to BPA, PO Box 17774, Seattle, WA  98127
 
Parents and guardians, if you would like to chaperone, the anticipated cost is $425 with an initial $150 deposit due on July 1, 2017.  We need 4 female and 4 male chaperones. Please contact Band Rep Jen Witeck if you would like to volunteer or have any questions about the trip.  

Husky Band Day
Let's Go Band!  We are excited to once again participate in the Husky Band Day on September 16th.  Stay tuned for more details on this event as the date approaches!  We also need 10-12 chaperones to volunteer. Please contact Band Rep Jen Witeck. Thank you!

WMEA Conference "Concert Hour" Performance
The Wind Ensemble's invitation to perform at the WMEA Conference in Yakima on February 16, 2018 is truly an honor.  Selected based upon a submission of their April 2017 Carnegie Hall concert, The Wind Ensemble will entertain music directors and educators from around the state during the coveted "Concert Hour" time slot.  More details will to follow in the fall, including information on an overnight stay the evening prior to the performance.


Chamber Orchestra to NYC  - Deposit Due!

New and returning Chamber Orchestra members - Congratulations and keep reading!


Chamber Orchestra is going to New York City next March 1-4, to compete in the National Orchestra Cup! They will perform in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the performance venue of the New York Philharmonic on Saturday, March 3rd. 

In order to reserve competitive airfare, and our spot in the competition, we are asking for a deposit of $500, due by July 1st 2017. Make your online payment here . 

The trip, is estimated to cost approximately $1,800 per student. The Ballard Performing Arts Boosters have a mission to help support our students in their performance opportunities that include travel, and we will continue to offer student fundraisers beginning in the fall. 

Attention Parents and Guardians: if you are interested in chaperoning the NYC trip, we will be looking for up to four parents to join us in New York City.  Please contact Orchestra Parent Representative, Sylvia Schweinberger, if you are interested.

Recordings Available
Winter Concert music files are online. Inside each Band, Choir or Orchestra folder are folders with each group's songs and each Mozart's Requiem in both WAV and MP3 formats. Use WAV files to burn CDs, MP3s to download to iPods and similar devices. MP3s will show up in alphabetical order, but they have track numbers embedded in them, and should sort themselves into performance order once they're in iTunes or some similar program.

Please respect the composers' copyright and do not share with anyone outside of your ensemble except for the Requiem. Mozart's copyright has expired.

Fall Concert Recordings Available
Enjoy the music at home
 to open a folder called "Ballard Fall 2016."  Inside are separate folders for band, choir and orchestra, and inside each of those are folders for .WAV files and MP3 files.   Download .WAV files if you want to burn your own CDs. If you have trouble downloading the .WAV files please contact Diane Taylor for assistance. Download MP3 files if you are using a device like an iPad or an iPhone.  The MP3 files will appear in alphabetical order, but the track numbers are embedded, so when they are downloaded into iTunes as an album, they should arrange themselves in the proper order.  

MP3 files are for listening.  WAV files must be downloaded to your computer and are for burning CDs


Please respect the copyright on this music, do not share it with students who are not in our music program or upload it anywhere else on the web.  The copyright act allows "One archive or study recording" per musician.
